The short version: Fretionary works almost entirely on your device. We collect a small set of ad-measurement events so we can run ads on Meta (Facebook and Instagram) and know whether they're working — and we only attach a device identifier to those events if you grant permission through Apple's tracking prompt. We don't sell your data, and we don't share your name, email, or any personal identifier with anyone.
Who We Are
Fretionary is a guitar theory reference app developed and published by Renmus Software LLC, a Florida limited liability company. If you have any questions about this policy, contact us at privacy@fretionary.com.
Information We Do Not Collect
Fretionary is designed to work almost entirely on your device and never requires an account. We do not collect:
- Your name, email address, or any personal identifiers
- Your location or device GPS data
- Your contacts, photos, camera, or microphone data
- Any health or financial information
- Your in-app activity beyond the small set of ad-measurement events described in the next section
Advertising and Ad Performance
We advertise Fretionary on Meta (Facebook and Instagram) to reach guitar players who'd benefit from the app. So we can tell whether those ads work and improve them, we share a small set of anonymous events with Meta:
- That the app was installed and launched
- That you completed the onboarding tour
- That you viewed the subscription upgrade screen
- That you tapped a subscription option
If you grant permission via Apple's App Tracking Transparency prompt, your device's advertising identifier (IDFA) is included so Meta can attribute the install to a specific ad campaign. If you decline, we still send the event signal but with no advertising identifier — Meta receives aggregate measurement only.
You can change this choice at any time:
- iOS: Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking → Fretionary
- Android: Settings → Privacy → Ads (you can reset or delete your advertising ID)
Subscription activity (whether you subscribed, cancelled, renewed, or made a one-time purchase) is also shared with Meta by our subscription provider, RevenueCat, server-to-server. This helps Meta optimize our ad campaigns for users likely to subscribe.
We never share your name, email address, or any other personal identifier with Meta. The Meta SDK is governed by Meta's data policy.
Subscription Purchases
Fretionary offers optional in-app purchases (monthly, annual, and lifetime subscriptions) processed entirely through Apple's App Store. We never see or store your payment information. All billing is handled by Apple under their own privacy policy and terms of service.
We use RevenueCat to manage subscription entitlements. RevenueCat receives a hashed, anonymous identifier to verify your subscription status. No personally identifiable information is shared. You can review RevenueCat's privacy policy at revenuecat.com/privacy.
Local Data Storage
Fretionary stores your preferences (selected root note, scale, chord, label mode) locally on your device using standard iOS storage. This data never leaves your device and is deleted when you uninstall the app.
Audio
The app includes pre-recorded guitar note samples bundled within the app itself. These samples play back locally on your device. We do not access your microphone and no audio is transmitted anywhere.
Notifications
If you grant notification permission, Fretionary sends occasional local reminders to your device to help you maintain a practice streak (for example: "Don't break your 5-day streak — today's pick: D Dorian"). These notifications are generated and scheduled entirely on your device — we don't send messages from our servers, and no notification activity is reported back to us or to any third party.
You can revoke notification permission at any time in your device's system settings:
- iOS: Settings → Notifications → Fretionary
- Android: Settings → Apps → Fretionary → Notifications
Children's Privacy
Fretionary is rated 4+ on the App Store and is suitable for all ages. We do not knowingly collect any information from children or any other users, as described in this policy.
Third-Party Services
The app integrates with the following third-party services:
- Apple App Store / Google Play Store — for app distribution and in-app purchases
- RevenueCat — for subscription management and server-side delivery of subscription events to Meta
- Meta (Facebook) SDK — for ad-campaign attribution and conversion measurement, as described in the "Advertising and Ad Performance" section above
We do not integrate with any other analytics platforms, social-media SDKs, or crash-reporting tools.
Data Security
We do not maintain our own user database. The data sent to Meta and RevenueCat is transmitted over HTTPS and limited to the events described above. The rest of the app's data — your preferences, favorites, and recent selections — remains on your device under the operating system's standard security protections.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. Continued use of the app after any changes constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.
Your Rights
The data we share with Meta is tied to a device identifier rather than your identity, and you can opt out of personalized tracking at any time through your device's tracking settings (see the "Advertising and Ad Performance" section above). For any other questions or concerns, contact us at privacy@fretionary.com and we will respond within 30 days.
